1st CALL 4 CANCER
Dear Newly Diagnosed Cancer Patient
We know you just heard the worst news and life is really scary right now. We know exactly how scary it is for you, but cancer is not the death sentence that it once was. No matter the diagnosis and the staging there is hope, and there is life after cancer no matter the outcome. The decisions that you make over the next several weeks will determine the course of your journey, and that’s why we are here. Right now you are likely feeling like a deer caught in the headlights with no idea how to make your next move, and at 1st Call our goal is help you navigate and understand your options.
This is the time to be self-centered without being selfish. It is very important to make sure that you are the one in control of your journey. There are many things to consider when choosing a doctor that will be with you along the way. Make sure that you find a doctor that you can connect with, one who accepts that second opinions are valid, one who recognizes that there is no such thing as a dumb question, and one that won’t put a time limit on your life. No doctor can tell how you will respond to your therapy. We know you have lots of questions, so be sure to ask all of them and take someone with you to every doctor’s visit as there is too much to absorb.
Here at 1st Call we want to help guide you through the first several steps of your journey, and to do that we need to get to know you better. We want to know when you were diagnosed, what your diagnosis is, how you found out, and where you are being treated. We also want to know how and if you are talking to your loved ones, who your support system is, whether or not you have faith, and most importantly what your biggest fear is as you embark on this journey.
Cancer can be an amazing blessing, as insane as that sounds. Our purpose at 1st Call is to help steer you as you begin your trip down this road. We know that everyone copes differently and we are here to help you as a unique individual. Now is a time to be honest with what you are feeling and express your concerns and fears, and that’s why we are here. If you read this and want to know more or talk to someone who has been through what you have, please contact us.
Sincerely yours,
Karen McCulloch
